Dog Stories: Akitas

The Akita, or Akita Inu, depending if you are referring to the American breed or the Japanese mountain dog it was bred from, is a beautiful intelligent large breed dog. It has thick dark coats with very curly tails that slink up the back.

My girlfriend hates the dog’s tail because you can see her pooper (the dog’s pooper, not my girlfriend’s) and she is always yelling at the dog to put down its tail.

The Akita Inu is considered as the national dog of Japan and there are several monuments dedicated to Hachiko, the most famous and legendary dog in Japan. Hachiko waited patiently for nine years for his dead master to come home and he never did. I wish the mail man was that consistent.

So, back to our Akita here. These dogs can be extremely loyal and playful but are also a very dominating dog. If you don’t train them early (which John hasn’t), they tend to be aggressive and nippy. I wanted to do stories on dogs and call them, “The One Hundred Dogs That Bit me” but I think only like ten have ever done so.

If you decide to get one of these dogs, it is important that they know who their master is or else they will take charge. Heck, every time I try to cook, this damn dog gets underneath and tries to push me out of the way to get whatever I dropped unless it is lettuce. If you have an Akita, there is no need to mop your floors because this dog will eat and lick anything you drop.

Now, Akitas need exercise, good long walks, and margaritas . . .

Well, I need the margarita. The point is the Akita does not make a great indoor dog because it needs room to shake their thing. Also, they are not great around other aggressive dogs, because they need to be dominant. Your other dogs might get upset too because the Akita will inspect their bowl to make sure it is empty.

All in all, Akitas make great pets, and guard dogs, but need constant reinforcement to who is in charge, and I don’t mean trailer trash on a Friday night where have you hid my smokes, woman, or you gonna taste the back of my hand reinforcement, either.
